Youth and Education

5th khoroo, Khan-Uul districts, Ulaanbaatar G. Yanjinlkham experience as of 31st of March 2008

Through the Improving Education Opportunities for Children with Disabilities project I was able to attend a peer education training session that focused on positive attitudes towards children with disabilities. During the session I had a chance to participate in an activity where I could put myself in the position of a visual impaired person. It was not until that moment that realised how hard it is for people with disabilities. After the training, I saw an old man with cane. He was lead by a young person, who was almost dragging him along. Then I thought; does the young man know what he really wants? If I were to help the old man I would be more careful.

There are many children with disabilities attending my school. Therefore the peer education session was extremely useful to myself and other students counsel members that attended. After ADRA session the student counsel decided to organize a similar training at our school. The seventh grade class leaders worked together to perform two skits based on the awareness raising booklet provided by ADRA. The skits performed were about bullying between students with disabilities and those without disabilities.

Before attending the ADRA training I never use to listen to people with disabilities, now I stop to listen and pay attention to their ideas and opinions. At my school, the relationship between children with and without disabilities is increasingly becoming more positive thanks to ADRA Mongolia activities.
